Darline Graham Sworn In To U.S. Senate

Darline Graham has officially been sworn in as South Carolina's newest U.S. senator, taking office just three days after the death of her brother, longtime Sen. Lindsey Graham. Governor Henry McMaster appointed Graham to serve the remainder of her brother's term, which ends in January. A special election later this year will determine who will serve the next full Senate term after Republican voters choose a nominee. Darline Graham becomes the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate and has never before held elected office.

Meta Sued Over AI-Driven Layoffs

A group of 26 Meta employees has filed a lawsuit alleging the company’s artificial intelligence-driven layoff process disproportionately targeted workers who were on protected medical, parental or family leave. Meta eliminated about 8,000 positions, roughly 10% of its workforce, during a round of layoffs in May. The lawsuit claims the company used internal AI systems, employee activity and keystroke-monitoring data, and AI token-usage dashboards to help determine which workers would lose their jobs. The employees allege people on protected leave were selected for layoffs at a disproportionate rate. The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Oakland, California.

House Passes Bill To Make Daylight Saving Time Permanent

The House has passed legislation that would make daylight saving time permanent across most of the United States, eliminating the twice-a-year clock changes. Supporters of the measure say keeping clocks on daylight saving time year-round would provide more evening daylight when Americans are most active. The bill would still allow states to opt out if their legislatures choose to do so before the law takes effect. The proposal now heads to the Senate, where its future remains uncertain. It must pass the Senate and be signed by the president before it can become law.

The incident marks the third death in the past week involving encounters with ICE officers, drawing renewed attention to the agency's enforcement tactics.

Iranian Port Blockade Resumes As U.S.-Iran Conflict Escalates

Fighting between the United States and Iran intensified Wednesday as the U.S. reimposed its naval blockade on Iranian ports and launched another wave of strikes, prompting fresh threats from Tehran over energy exports and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The renewed hostilities come after President Donald Trump ordered the blockade restored, saying it is aimed at preventing Iranian attacks on commercial shipping and pressuring Tehran back to the negotiating table. Iranian officials responded by warning they could halt additional Middle East energy exports if the blockade continues. The escalating conflict has further undermined hopes of reviving a temporary agreement that had been intended to reduce tensions and restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy corridors.

Iraqi officials also said an oil pipeline agreement involving U.S. and Qatari companies is expected to be announced later this week. The meeting comes as Washington seeks to deepen ties with Baghdad amid continued instability across the Middle East.
