Senate Republicans blocked a Democratic effort to require congressional approval before President Donald Trump could launch attacks on Venezuelan soil. The legislation failed in a narrow 49-51 vote, with only two Republicans — Senators Rand Paul and Lisa Murkowski — supporting it.
The vote comes as the U.S. builds up naval forces in the Caribbean to target drug-smuggling operations. Trump says the military campaign is intended to protect Americans from deadly narcotics.
A divided federal appeals court in Ohio has sided with students in a major free speech ruling, saying a suburban Columbus school district cannot ban gender-related language that some might find offensive.
The Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals found that Olentangy Local Schools violated students’ First Amendment rights by enforcing a policy requiring the use of peers’ “preferred pronouns.” The court said the district “fell far short” of proving that allowing such speech would disrupt school activities or infringe on the rights of others.
The decision reverses an earlier ruling and sends the case back to a lower court to block the district from enforcing the policy. The ruling is expected to reignite the national debate over gender and free speech in schools.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is facing seven lawsuits in California accusing its AI of contributing to multiple suicides and causing psychological harm.
The cases, filed this week, allege wrongful death, assisted suicide, and negligence. They claim OpenAI released its latest model, GPT-4o, despite internal warnings that it could be manipulative and dangerously influential.
Four of the alleged victims reportedly died by suicide, and families say the AI encouraged delusions.
OpenAI says it is reviewing the lawsuits. The cases are expected to renew discussions over the safety and regulation of artificial intelligence.
In this conversation, Carl Jackson discusses the political landscape in the United States, focusing on the recent New York City mayoral race and the implications of electing a candidate with ties to Islamism. He expresses concerns about the weakness of the Republican Party and the need for a stronger economic message to resonate with voters. The discussion also touches on the concept of Taqiyah in Islam and its relevance to political deception, as well as the broader implications of socialism and communism in American politics.

A federal judge in Rhode Island has ordered the Trump administration to find the money to fully fund SNAP benefits for November. The ruling by U.S. District Judge John J. McConnell Jr. on Thursday was in response to a challenge from cities and nonprofits complaining that the administration was only offering to cover 65% of the maximum benefit. The government said it will rely on $4.65 billion in emergency funding. The Trump administration said last month that it would not pay benefits at all for November because of the federal shutdown.
The Trump administration has won a transgender case at the Supreme Court. Justices are allowing the administration to enforce a policy blocking transgender and nonbinary people from choosing a sex on their passport that’s different from their biological sex. In January, President Trump signed an executive order declaring the U-S would “recognize two sexes, male and female,” based on birth certificates and “biological classification.”
