WASHINGTON (AP) — Dr. Anthony Fauci’s decision to invoke the Fifth Amendment before Congress will be put to the test this week. A Republican-led Senate committee is preparing to vote on holding Fauci in contempt of Congress. A contempt finding could open the door to a federal investigation into whether Fauci had a valid constitutional right against self-incrimination when he refused to answer lawmakers' questions at a hearing on the COVID-19 pandemic. Republican senators insist a pardon Fauci received from Democratic President Joe Biden left him ineligible for Fifth Amendment protections. But the clemency is by its nature limited, and some legal experts say Fauci has reason to invoke the Fifth Amendment.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The State Department on Wednesday offered a $25 million reward for information leading to the capture of Juan Carlos González, or "Pelón,” scaling up pressure on a U.S. citizen who has emerged as the figurehead of Mexico's most powerful cartel. The reward was bumped up from $5 million. The Trump administration offered a total of $100 million in rewards for various leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG, and restricted the visas of family members and business associates of cartel members. The State Department said it was aimed at “crippling the organization’s leadership" while President Donald Trump has ramped up pressure on Mexico and other Latin American nations to carry out his security agenda. CJNG is among eight Mexican cartels designated as a foreign terrorist organization. The group was dealt a blow in February when leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, or “El Mencho.” was killed by the Mexican military. The U.S. provided intelligence for the operation, which resulted in a burst in violence in the state of Jalisco. González, Oseguera Cervantes’s stepson and a dual Mexican and U.S. citizen, is reported to have taken control of the cartel, which is involved in everything from avocado production to drug smuggling. Wednesday's move comes a few weeks after the Trump administration slapped sanctions against 50 people and companies linked with the cartel, including González. The sanctions froze assets and blocked U.S. financial transactions with those cited. The cartel is considered the largest in Mexico, with a presence in 21 of its 32 states. Its operations have extended to several countries, including the United States. The Trump administration has ramped up pressure on the government of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to crack down more heavily on cartels, even threatening military action against the groups.

WASHINGTON (AP) — North Carolina Republican congressman Chuck Edwards has withdrawn from his reelection campaign days after the House Ethics Committee recommended he be censured for unprofessional and inappropriate conduct toward two young female aides. The 65-year-old Edwards has denied any of his conduct was intended as a sexual or romantic advance, but the committee says his behavior would “lead a reasonable observer to interpret it as such.” Edwards said Wednesday on X he made the decision to drop his bid for a third term after “much prayer and reflection." The Ethics Committee on Monday recommended the censure, an act registering its deep disapproval of a lawmaker’s conduct that does not meet the threshold for expulsion.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California man is expected in court on a federal weapons charge after authorities say he was arrested at President Donald Trump's golf course near Los Angeles. Authorities say Jeanine John Taele appeared to be monitoring security before the president's visit there and claimed to be part of the security detail. Taele was scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles Wednesday. Law enforcement officials say they seized guns and ammunition from Taele's home after he was arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club. Trump attended a Republican National Committee fundraiser at the club on Tuesday. Taele faces both state and federal charges.

Abdul El-Sayed's victory in Michigan's Democratic Senate primary is the latest and perhaps most significant evidence that the party's voters are looking to turn the page on establishment-backed politicians — even in must-win battlegrounds. The progressive candidate narrowly defeated Rep. Haley Stevens to set up a November matchup with former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers. El-Sayed has little time to celebrate before pivoting to patching up divisions in the party after a bruising primary. During much of the Trump era, Democratic primary voters have often followed the urging of party leaders and favored moderate candidates like Stevens. But this year, they've veered toward insurgents like El-Sayed, who tapped into widespread discontent with the Democratic establishment and the status quo in Washington. Democrats need to rack up as many wins as possible to take back the U.S. Senate, so the party has little room for error against Rogers.

Multiple people were shot and several people were killed Wednesday morning at a home in Caswell County, North Carolina, according to authorities. The Caswell County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded just before 8 a.m. to a home in the Prospect Hill community. Posting on Facebook, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation writes: "The Caswell County Sheriff's Office has requested the assistance of the North Carolina State Bureau Of Investigation regarding an early morning mass shooting on Brooks Road in Prospect Hill, North Carolina. This event occurred around 8:30 AM. Caswell Deputies and the North Carolina State Highway Patrol immediately responded. There is no threat to the general public at this time. The Castle County sheriffs office is working to gather the facts of the case. No additional information is available at this time."

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating why a plane was allowed to take off as President Donald Trump’s helicopter was approaching Reagan National Airport in what appears to be a violation of safety procedures put in place after last year’s midair collision between an airliner and an Army helicopter near that busy Washington D.C. airport. The incident occurred Tuesday as Marine One left the White House for Andrews Air Force Base with the president aboard. A commercial jet took off at the same time. The FAA decided after 67 people died on Jan. 29, 2025 that all takeoffs and landings at Reagan would be halted anytime a helicopter passes by the airport.

DUBAI, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Iran and Oman have reached an understanding on the geographic coordinates for a shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, and a joint announcement is being finalised, provided certain third parties did not interfere, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Wednesday. Baghaei added that any such agreement between Iran and Oman would not, by itself, guarantee security in the strategic waterway. The proposed deal between Iran and Oman would give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters on Wednesday, in one of the biggest concessions yet to Iran. Despite the apparent step towards yielding to Iranian demands, the sources pushed back against assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump that a deal reopening the strait was imminent, saying important details still had to be agreed. Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the negotiations between Tehran and Muscat as "professional" and "moving forward", saying "the two sides had reached a mutual understanding on the geographical parameters of the route under discussion". Baghaei added that, if some third parties do not obstruct the process, the joint statement between the two countries, containing the main considerations and key points of understanding, was in the final stages of review and drafting.
