Lies, D*&^%$ Lies and Theological Lies

RSS Feed

On Wednesday we talked about how perverse, sick and evil ideas have a life all their own and how they tend to change clothes and just keep moving, no matter how hard we try to kill them.  Yesterday we discussed how utterly perverse our common public moral discussion has become.  Dark days.  Today I had hoped to turn the page to something brighter and lighter, but alas.  The perversion just keeps coming…

This:

Some Point Loma Nazarene University alumni are raising concerns about the Christian university’s dean of students, alleging he told student leaders that identifying as being “in Christ alone” reflected “white privilege.”

The controversy centers on PLNU Dean of Students Jason Cha, whose 2023 dissertation at Azusa Pacific University is titled “Raging Waters of Whiteness: Addressing White Evangelical Racism in Higher Education.”

Cha’s dissertation examines the “lived experiences of diversity professionals addressing whiteness at Christian colleges” through frameworks including “critical race theory, critical white studies, and evangelical postcolonial studies.”

Cha became PLNU’s dean of students in March 2025. In this role, he oversees several areas of student life, including multicultural and international student services, new student engagement, and residential life.

“Christ Alone” is one of the so-called “Five Solas” – the theological pillars on which the Reformation was built and while ecumenical politics would keep Catholics from ever saying it just that way, they agree too.  To taint the statement “In Christ Alone” in any fashion is not merely to be wrong – it is to be heretical.  There is no need for a dissertation to argue with this assertion, the Bible takes care of that all on its own:

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

One of the great hymns of the Church:

Join hands, then, children of the faith,
Whate’er your race may be!
Who serves my Father as a child
Is surely kin to me.

Jesus had little tolerance for false teaching:

The Pharisees and the teachers of the Law are experts in the Law of Moses.  So obey everything they teach you, but don’t do as they do. After all, they say one thing and do something else.

They pile heavy burdens on people’s shoulders and won’t lift a finger to help.  Everything they do is just to show off in front of others. They even make a big show of wearing Scripture verses on their foreheads and arms, and they wear big tassels for everyone to see.  They love the best seats at banquets and the front seats in the synagogues.  And when they are in the market, they like to have people greet them as their teachers….

You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. You won’t go in yourselves, and you keep others from going in.

You Pharisees and teachers of the Law of Moses are in for trouble! You’re nothing but show-offs. You travel over land and sea to win one follower. And when you have done so, you make that person twice as fit for hell as you are.

He goes on for a while, and there is nothing I can add of any importance.  I think this covers it pretty thoroughly.
