Israel deported activist Greta Thunberg, the country’s Foreign Ministry said, a day after the Gaza-bound ship she was on was seized by the Israeli military. Thunberg later emerged from the airport in Paris and accused Israel of attacking and kidnapping those on the aid flotilla. Thunberg was one of 12 passengers on board the Madleen, a boat carrying aid destined for people in war-torn Gaza. The activists said they were protesting the ongoing war and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Israel says such ships violate its naval blockade of Gaza.
The Ukrainian air force says Russia launched 479 drones at the country in the war’s biggest overnight drone bombardment. It also said 20 missiles of various types were fired at different parts of Ukraine. The attacks usually start late in the evening and end in the morning because drones are harder to see in the dark. Russia has targeted civilian areas of Ukraine with Shahed drones since the start of the war. The U.N. says the attacks have killed more than 12,000 Ukrainian civilians. A recent escalation in aerial attacks has coincided with a renewed Russian battlefield push along eastern and northeastern parts of the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta says the state’s sovereignty was “trampled” by President Donald Trump when he ordered National Guard troops to the immigration protests in Los Angeles. Bonta spoke Monday as he announced plans to sue the Trump administration. He said the state will seek a court order declaring that Trump’s use of the Guard was unlawful and ask for a restraining order to halt the deployment. Bonta said the suit will be filed later Monday.
