Texas Democrats have prevented their state’s House of Representatives from moving forward, at least for now, with a redrawn congressional map sought by President Donald Trump. The map would shore up Republicans’ 2026 midterm prospects as Trump's political standing falters. After dozens of Democrats left the state, the Republican-dominated House was unable Monday to establish the quorum of lawmakers required to do business. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has made threats about removing some members of the opposition from their seats. Democrats pushed back Monday. Some mocked Abbott as the weak figure in the drama, saying he is “bending a knee” to Trump. And at least one legal expert casts doubt on the governor's ability to sanction any state lawmaker.

President Trump is doubling down on his criticism of last week’s monthly jobs report. In social media posts, the president slammed the July employment numbers as “rigged” and “concocted” in order to hurt the Trump administration. He complained about “massive” revisions to the previous two month’s numbers, calling them “fake.” And has alleged, without evidence, that partisan federal workers are trying to sabotage him. Last week, he fired the head of the Bureau of Labor Statistics and he promises to “pick an exceptional replacement” in the coming days.
Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says Democratic lawmakers who left his state to block the GOP from redrawing congressional district boundaries have effectively forfeited their seats. Abbott insists he will begin trying to remove Democratic lawmakers from office if they do not return. Democrats in Texas and around the U.S. are pushing back. They say Abbott has no power to punish the lawmakers and that it's Republicans, including President Donald Trump, who are abusing their power. At issue are the U.S. House districts for Texas and whether Republicans can successfully redraw them to give the party a better chance to hold its slim congressional majority after the 2026 midterm elections.
