American Students Are Failing in Education

RSS Feed

In a concerning trend across the United States, the educational performance of students is alarmingly low. In Baltimore, 13 public high schools report that none of their students can perform basic math at grade level. Similarly, over 50 public schools in Illinois, particularly in the southern and western areas of Chicago, report zero percent proficiency in reading and math among their students. Nationally, a significant 85% of black eighth graders are not proficient in reading or math. This crisis extends to New York City, where a majority of students in grades three through five failed their English language arts tests last school year. The situation is particularly dire for third graders, with 57% failing, followed by 52% of fourth graders and 57% of fifth graders. Only 48% of students in grades four through eight are rated proficient in English, marking a 5% decline from the previous year. Darius Williams, a senior teacher at Wheatley High School in Houston, Texas, highlighted the severity of this issue. On his second day of teaching, he discovered that his seniors, who are on the verge of graduating and entering college, could not complete a simple four-word sentence after reading two paragraphs. Williams, who holds a second bachelor's degree and is enrolled in a master's program, faced backlash from critics questioning his qualifications. Despite his credentials, the situation underscores the urgent need for improvements in educational standards and teacher support to ensure students are adequately prepared for the future.
